Pearce Called Up for Aug. 10th USMNT Match v. Mexico

Klinsmann Calls In 22 Players to Face Mexico on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia

CHICAGO (Aug. 4, 2011) — U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named a 22-player roster that will travel to Philadelphia in advance of the match against regional rival Mexico on Aug. 10 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The match will be the first for the former FIFA World Cup and European Championship winner at the helm of the U.S. Men’s National Team since being named head coach.

Pearce Earns Second Consecutive MLS All Star Game Selection

Game-day roster for AT&T All-Star Game revealed

Beckham, Donovan, Henry highlight roster of 22 players from 12 teams

NEW YORK — LA Galaxy stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan join New York Red Bulls standout Thierry Henry among the 22 MLS All-Stars confirmed on the game-day roster that will compete against Manchester United in the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 27 at Red Bull Arena (8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, Galavisión and TSN).

All-Star Head Coach Hans Backe of the Red Bulls selected the roster. Because of the competitive format — MLS vs. the World — of the All-Star Game, MLS asked Backe to select from among all available players, and he constructed a dynamic, balanced roster loaded with the league’s top talent. Backe also has seen success against Manchester United, including two wins during the 2007-08 English Premier League season when he was assistant coach at Manchester City under then-head coach Sven-Göran Eriksson.

Backe selected all eight of the original fan-voted All-Stars — including AT&T Text voting winner Matt Besler of Sporting Kansas City — who are available to play on July 27. Kasey Keller (Seattle Sounders FC) and Brek Shea (FC Dallas) are unavailable because of CONCACAF Champions League matches during the week of the All-Star Game. Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy) and Rafa Márquez (New York Red Bulls) are unavailable because of injuries.

NOTE: Backe will discuss his selections at approximately 6 p.m. ET today on MLSsoccer.com’s ExtraTime Radio podcast (also available on iTunes).

In addition to 11-time All-Star Donovan, ex-Manchester United midfielder Beckham and World Cup Champion Henry, the roster also features prominent All-Star veterans such as Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo) and Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake).

Other selections have loads of international experience but are MLS All-Stars for the first time: Mexican icon Omar Bravo (Sporting Kansas City), Colombian national team veteran Faryd Mondragón (Philadelphia Union), US national team left back Heath Pearce (Chivas USA) and speedy Jamaican striker Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids).

The roster is below. Players are listed by the position they are most likely to play in the All-Star Game, which is not necessarily the position they play for their respective clubs.

Pearce to throw out ceremonial first pitch at the Dodgers game Sunday

June 14, 2011

Chivas USA will be at Dodger Stadium this Sunday for “Viva Los Dodgers Day”, an afternoon full of fun events. Fans can meet Tristan Bowen and Gerson Mayen, mingle with the ChivaGirls and ChivaFighter and take in live music, all starting at 11:10am in Lot 6, two hours before the game begins.

Perhaps the centerpiece of the afternoon will be when Chivas USA defender Heath Pearce steps out onto the famous mound in Chavez Ravine to throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch.

“I am really excited,” said Pearce.  “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.  I loved playing baseball growing up, and I’m a big baseball fan, so it’s always been a dream of mine.  Hopefully I throw a good pitch.”

Based off everything Pearce told us, he shouldn’t have any trouble making a solid pitch. While Pearce was with FC Dallas, the 26-year-old used to play catch with roommate George John all the time, he said.  And plus, he was a pretty good baseball player as a kid.

“I played on a few All-Star teams growing up,” recalled the Modesto California native. Pearce gave up the game around the age of twelve he says, at that age “when you basically had to make decisions, if you wanted to play soccer year-round and that sort of stuff.  So that was end of it.”

Although he hasn’t practiced in a while, Pearce says he isn’t nervous.  He’ll dust off a ball and warm up a bit before Sunday, but he’s confident in his ability.

“I mean if I had to sing the National Anthem, I’d be nervous,” joked Pearce. “But I can throw the first pitch, it’ll be fun.”

MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week: Week 8

Defender Heath Pearce makes the cut

The stars came out for the big match between the New York Red Bulls and the LA Galaxy in Week 8 and they reappear in MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week selections with two Designated Players from the magical night in Carson, Calif., making the best XI squad.

The two newest faces come from Seattle and Toronto, where two first-year players who were short on MLS starts proved they are big on confidence and personality.

GK: Kevin Hartman (FC Dallas) – Great goalkeepers answer the bell when called on and Hartman did just that against DC on more than one occasion, including a late save on United's Fred that was worth a standings point.

DF: Ugo Ihemelu (FC Dallas) – He chased down everything that came his way against D.C. United. Ihemelu’s full-time return to center back has helped offer some stability to an FC Dallas team still coping with the loss of its best player.

DF: Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls) – Not just for the goal-line clearance. In a game where RBNY’s back line was under more pressure than usual, Ream showed he is as timely and precise with his defending as he is with his passing.

DF: Drew Moor (Colorado Rapids) - The symbol of a Rapids team that has suffered more than a season’s worth of lumps and adversity. With every punch to the gut, he’s back up off the mat. Battled every Revs attacker on Saturday and won most every duel.

DF: Hearth Pearce (Chivas USA) – The new fixture at central defense for the Goats was one of the major reasons that they held up for 87 minutes with a two-man disadvantage against RSL. Pearce was a ball magnet, making a game-high 10 clearances, mostly under difficult circumstances.

MF: David Beckham (LA Galaxy) – The Englishman rose to the occasion against the Red Bulls. Whether from central midfield or out on the right, the pinpoint precision of his passing is central to the Galaxy’s new style and central to its ability to score. Another assist on Donovan’s header takes him just one off the league lead.

MF: Servando Carrasco (Seattle Sounders) – The rookie midfielder was unfazed in only his second career start, going the 90 minutes and handling them like a seasoned pro. He made good decisions, he took the majority of set pieces and he wasn’t afraid to mix it up when necessary.

MF: Juninho (LA Galaxy) – The skillful Brazilian is a quiet but critical piece of the passing game that the Galaxy are evolving this year. His feel for the game against New York was evident as he generally popped up in the right spots, keeping the play moving and giving order to his team.

FW: Charlie Davies (D.C. United) – Author of a goal and assist last Wednesday against Seattle, Davies continues to press on and make his runs regardless of the quality of service he may receive.

FW: Joao Plata (Toronto FC) – What 19-year-old in MLS has the gall to grab the ball and demand he take a penalty kick in his first ever start? Fans, teammates and coach alike love the Ecuadorean's attitude.

FW: Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls) – The Frenchman’s renewed drive and bite in 2011 was on display for all to see against LA. He not only scored and gifted fans doses of flair, but he also engaged in the hard-nosed play when necessary, standing up for his team against the Galaxy’s biggest names.

Manager: Gary Smith (Colorado Rapids) – The defending champs come away with four points from a two-game road trip in the span of three days. A team suffering from critical injuries and numerous absences also lose Caleb Folan and Omar Cummings along the way but still compete valiantly. The ultimate sign of great coaching.

Honorable Mentions: Colin Clark (Houston Dynamo), Bouna Coundoul (New York Red Bulls), Julian de Guzman (Toronto FC), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Patrick Ianni (Seattle Sounders), Kasey Keller (Seattle Sounders), Perry Kitchen (D.C. United), Nick LaBrocca (Chivas USA), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Fredy Montero (Seattle Sounders), Andy Najar (D.C. United), Je-Vaughn Watson (Houston Dynamo), Josh Wolff (D.C. United)

Pearce slides to central defense as Chivas adjust

CARSON, Calif. – Injuries and national team call-ups have forced Chivas USA to get creative with their lineups early into the season. The result is a number of players being tested at new positions.

One example is veteran defender Heath Pearce, a natural outside back who has started the last three matches (including US Open Cup play) as a center back. It’s a position that Pearce had never played in a game situation prior to this year.

On Saturday, Pearce will get his biggest test yet in the heart of the defense as the Rojiblancos face the explosive attack of the Vancouver Whitecaps at Empire Field (7:30 pm ET, Direct Kick, MatchDay Live).

A leader in the training ground, Pearce feels that while there is a learning curve, being in central defense allows him to lead the defense more effectively. In the two matches that Pearce has played centrally, he has drawn rave reviews for his ability to organize the Rojiblancos, which has only conceded two goals while Pearce has been in the center.

“Being central gives me more of a chance to organize the defense because when you’re outside, you’re kind of isolated since the center back next to you is the one controlling the lines,” Pearce told MLSsoccer.com. “At center back, you’re linked up to seven or eight guys that you can move and control, which helps you set the tempo of the game and just helps me lead a lot better.”

In the scoreless draw against the Columbus Crew, the Rojiblancos started Pearce alongside rookie Zarek Valentin, which led to head coach Robin Fraser to joke before that match that his team started a back line of four outside backs.

It was an experiment that helped the club earn the shutout, but was not without testy moments as defensive miscues led to scoring chances for the Crew.

The Whitecaps pose a unique challenge with physical players like Eric Hassli (whom Fraser calls a “giant”) and former Chivas man Atiba Harris (“only slightly smaller”) counter-balancing the speedy Camilo in attack. During the first few weeks of the season, Vancouver have made a living off capitalizing off defensive errors, a fact of which that Fraser is keenly aware.

“We’ve played well and solidly at times, but we’ve had some individual mistakes that have gotten us into trouble," the Goats coach said. "This is a team that will exploit us if we continue to have mistakes. It’s huge, every game is an opportunity to get better and we’ve certainly shuffled guys over the field, it’s all just a work in progress.”

Pearce will likely be joined in the back by Valentin for a second straight match as Chivas USA captain Jimmy Conrad is still experiencing concussion symptoms and is not expected to travel to Vancouver. Also not traveling with the team is midfielder Paulo Nagamura, who will get at least one more week of rest before returning to the lineup.

There is a bright spot however, as veteran midfielder Simon Elliott is expected to travel and may start against the Whitecaps.
